Abstrakt: This report discusses the consequences of mild to moderate iodine deficiency (MMID) on pregnant women and their offspring. Unlike those of severe iodine deficiency, the effects of MMID are not well understood. The role of iodine in thyroid physiology, the sources and intake recommendations of the mineral, and methods of determining iodine status are reviewed followed by a discussion of recent studies that explore the consequences of MMID. Results of this review will help childbirth educators recognize that MMID can cause cognitive and psychomotor delays, as well as autism, in offspring, and increase oxidative stress in mothers.
