| Abstrakt: | The article discusses the significance of the fact that the Dutch East India Company (AKA Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) imported large amounts of small coins called duiten to the island of Java. The author argues that the coins were not usable by the VOC for international trade but were used by locals on Java in the market, thereby transforming the local economy. |
