The article looks at the contributions of research in the history of education in helping to understand some of the contemporary problems in educational institutions and compares the history of education disciplines in France and Germany. The public debate over the state of educational systems including poor school performances, loss of authority, lack of motivation among teachers, and the replacement of literary studies in favor of scientific and economic studies are discussed. Topics include the development of teaching theories in German universities in the late 18th century, educational historiography debates in France between the State and the Catholic Church during the Third Republic, German and French educational philosophies, and historians as researchers of the history of education. |
