The article looks at military songs from the French Army influenced by other cultures from 1950 to 2000. It discusses the song from the Légion étrangère (foreign legion) entitled "Les Bérets verts" adapted from "Ballad of the Green Berets" composed by U.S. Sergeant Barry Sadler and military songs used as a way to integrate foreign soldiers into the Army. Additional topics include the introduction of religious German songs such as "Mon beau sapin" (O Tannenbaum), songs such as "Chant des Tabors" and "Les Africains," and songs to promote patriotism such as "Nos pères les Gaulois" which borrowed the melody from the song "When Johnny comes marching home." |
