Abstrakt: The article discusses the biographical works of nineteenth-century German historian Johann Gustav Droysen and their role in establishing Droysen's academic, intellectual, and political reputation. In particular, the author focuses on Droysen's biography of Frederick I, King in Prussia, first published in 1867 and entitled "Friedrich I.: König von Preußen," situating it within the broader political and intellectual debates of the era of the Wars of German Unification and the German national movement more broadly. Aspects considered include Droysen's underlying epistemology, his approach to biographical methodology and historiography, and his self-presentation in a later portrait of the historian, painted in 1885 by the artist Eduard Bendemann.
