Although aerobic exercise training is considered to be an essential component in the medical management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), water-based aerobic exercise (Wex) for T2DM patients is still limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a Wex program versus a land-based exercise (Lex) program on cutaneous microvascular reactivity and C-reactive protein (CRP) in T2DM. A total of 19 female seniors with the diagnosis of T2DM volunteered to participate either in the Wex group (n = 10) or in the Lex group (n = 9). Both groups performed the same 30-min continuous aerobic exercise 3 d⋅wk-1 for 12 wks. Body weight, percentage of body fat, resting heart rate, fasting blood glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were significantly decreased in both groups at the 12th-wk of training (P<0.05). HOMA-IR and malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly decreased (P<0.05) only in the Wex group. For cutaneous reactive hyperemia, peak perfusion was significantly higher than baseline (P<0.05) only in the Wex group. Time to peak and recovery time were observed to be significant (P<0.05) in both groups. CRP was significantly decreased in the Wex group and greater than the Lex group (P<0.05). The Wex group showed greater improvements in microvascular reactivity than the Lex group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
