Abstrakt: This article argues that postcolonial African literature is characterized by an ambivalent linguistic situation whereby today the vast majority of African creative writers still write in European languages and not in their mother tongues. The writings reveal the dilemma of reproducing equivalent cultural experiences in a European language while still retaining the rhythm and structure of the oral tradition inherent in the African unwritten original language. It thus appears vital for the translator of this category of literature to first of all carry out an interpretative analysis of the African author's translation strategies from his native language into the European language in the source text and then be guided by them when translating into the target language.
