News briefs concerning politics in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia, as of May 9, 2014, are presented. Czech President Milos Zeman threatened a military intervention by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should Russia extend its intervention in Ukraine beyond the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine. Businessman Andrej Kiska was elected president of Slovakia in elections held on March 15 and March 29, 2014. After losing the election for the leadership to her party, Positive Slovenia (PS), to the mayor of Ljubljana, Slovenia, on April 25, 2014, Slovenian prime minister Alenka Bratusek resigned from her office on May 5, 2014. |
