Abstrakt: This paper deals with the Environmental Impact of Tehri Dam Reservoir on the villagers living in its periphery. Tehri Dam is one of the Asia's highest rock-fill dam with a height of 260 meters and a capacity of 2400 MW electricity and has a reservoir of 42 sq km. Drinking water, irrigation, flood control are some of the other objectives of the dam. Thus the dam is constructed for the overall development of the nation. However, it has fully uprooted 38 villages and 5291 families along with a township of Old Tehri and 88 villages with 4278 families partially affected. Not only this the alluvial valley of River Bhagirathi and Bhilangana has also been submerged, which is responsible for breaking of the social fabric among the displaced and the stayers. Marginalization and impoverishment of the peasants, breaking jajmani relations and uprooting of the poorest section of the society i.e. scheduled castes, decreasing marriage market for children, weakening kinship bonds, vanishing of traditional market facilities affecting their sale and purchases, climate change, adverse effect on health and health facilities, silencing of the holy river and traditional temples and Devais, etc. are some of environmental effects which have been dealt with in detail in this paper.
