The article reports on the requirement of the National Collegiate Athletic Association to screen all its athletes for Sickle Cell Trait (SCT), that is part of a 2010 settlement with the family of Rice University's football player Dale Lloyd II who died from an undiagnosed SCT in 2006. Topics discussed include the findings of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research on the role of SCT in athletes' deaths, the controversy in SCT screening and advice on preventive measures. |
