Abstrakt: The article focuses on the research on field anaesthesia of the African elephant Loxodonta africana. Topics discussed include use of anesthesia to capture, transport and clinical examination of captive animals at a zoological park or for minor surgical procedures, physiological implications of animals after anaesthetisation and use of etorphine by continuous rate infusion for the maintenance of anaesthesia. Also discusses methods to prevent complications like myositis during recumbency.
