Highlights: [•] Legume-based cropping is promoted as a sustainable method for adding N to nutrient-deficient farming systems. [•] This added N can improve crop yields and reduce reliance on mineral fertilizers. [•] However, some of the N may be subject to gaseous (N2O) or leaching losses.
