The Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) is composed of several clinical problems involving masticatory muscles, TMJ and associated structures. This study aimed at assessing the effect of the plane occlusal splint (POS) and soft splint (SS) in relieving pain symptoms of 30 female patients, aged between 17 and 55 years with painful symptoms of TMD. These were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive different treatments. The assessments of the patients were made by pain analysis within Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the plate set-up time (zero), 15, 30 and 90 days. After obtaining the data, they have been analyzed statistically using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests, where the significance level is higher than or equal to 0.05. It has been found that the POS generally has shown statistically a significant improvement in the pain diminish, when we compare the different times of control, the POS during the period of 0-15 and 30-90 days has shown an improvement in the pain diminish, notwithstanding, it is not statistically significant, however during periods of 0-30, 0-90, 15-30 and 15-90 this improvement was statistically significant. With the SS within whole time intervals there was a relief of painful symptoms. Comparing the two sets in each time, it has been found that there was no significant difference in control of 15 days, however, the controls of 0, 30 and 90 days, the POS is better than soft statistically. Therefore, both are effective for pain relief of TMD, but the POS is significantly better in diminishing the symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
