Abstrakt: Due to a shortage of priests, the Catholic Church is faced with the inevitable prospect of accelerated parish closures, consolidations and other changes in current local hierarchies that will alter the manner in which the faith is promoted and practiced. This paper documents the Pastoral Planning process used by two rural parishes that have operated as separate entities for over 130 years in close proximity to each other. The goal of the proposed changes was to make the two congregations a combined entity to serve the varied needs of each community while maintaining faith formation and service. This paper presents this case study in terms of the efforts of the two communities to achieve a satisfactory synergy that was hoped to be accomplished through extensive planning, the combined discussions of the Pastoral Planning committee and polling of the respective constituencies for their opinions through public meetings and surveys. The lens for analysis is both the management literature on mergers and acquisitions and the sociological research on acculturation following the suggestions of Van de Ven (2007).
