Romance fraudsters prey upon the emotions of their victims by cultivating a romantic relationship and then exploiting this relationship for personal gain. The cruelest thing about romance scams is that they prey on their victims' loneliness, often targeting soldiers, the elderly, and people who are newly divorced or widowed. As the romance progresses, victims will allow the fraudster increasing access to personal and financial information, allowing the fraudster to wreak economic and emotional havoc on his victim. This paper offers suggestions for protecting yourself-and your assets-from becoming a casualty of romance fraud. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
