Abstrakt: Background: Patient's pain or discomfort during and after non-surgical periodontal therapy has received minor attention despite it is the regular dental procedure. Periodontal scaling procedures commonly require some kind of anesthesia. From the patient's perspective, the choice of anesthetic method is a trade-off between the degree of anesthesia and accepting the side effects. This study aims to evaluate patient's previous and current experience of pain or discomfort during and after non-surgical periodontal therapy, to identify relationship between previous experience of pain during non-surgical periodontal therapy and preferred anesthesia method and to identify preferences for local anesthesia gel versus injection. Materials and Methods: Patients (N = 30) were enrolled into two groups, underwent both anesthesia methods in two visits, as it was a two-period, crossover, randomized open study. Previous and current experience of pain or discomfort during and after non-surgical periodontal therapy and preferred anesthesia method were assessed by questionnaires. Results: The mean score for experience of pain or discomfort during and after non-surgical periodontal therapy was higher with anesthetic injection than anesthetic gel. No significant association between previous experience of pain during scaling and preferred anesthesia method (P = 0.576). 77% of patients chose anesthetic gel for scaling whereas 23% preferred anesthetic injection. Conclusion: Pain or discomfort during and after is more with injection due to the fact that local anesthetic injection itself causing pain or discomfort to patients. The fewer pain or discomfort during and after scaling explains the preferences for local anesthetic gel for non-surgical periodontal therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
