In this article, the author investigates the ethnic origins of the Romanians, or Vlachs, of Serbia. The author begins by explaining various theories regarding these origins, which include the notion that the group was autochthonous and that they migrated from Romanian lands in the 17th century. He goes on to examine the weak nature of Romanian ethnic identity in Serbia, which the author attaches to such concepts as Romanian economic conditions, language, and various ethno-cultural affiliations. Also explored is the separate identity of people deemed to be Vlachs. |
