Abstrakt: Teaching is described via a heuristic metaphor, pushing and pulling students towards ideas. The metaphor emerged from grounded study of four participating teachers, one of whose portraits is presented. The portrait displays the participating teacher's particular uses of pushes and pulls to give an example of each teacher's unique enaction of pushing/pulling. Pushes are imperative, command-based actions directed at students to move them towards ideas, while pulls are invitational, welcoming actions enticing the student's own interest in moving towards ideas. The metaphor is a heuristic adaptable by the teacher who chooses to work with it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
