The article discusses Western stereotypes about the alleged lack of a concept of romantic love in sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing primarily on the 19th and 20th centuries, the author develops her argument along the questions of whether romantic love is an idea unique to Western civilization and whether it would merely reflect Western influences on Africa if it was. Aspects of the subject considered include the available sources on African history and civilization, the history of gender roles and differences on the continent, and polygyny as a traditional African form of marriage. |
