In this article, the author examines the class-based nature of the discipline called journalism in the U.S. higher education institutions by accentuating the ideological insinuation of elite and non-elite curriculum distinction. He asserts that degrees obtained from Ivy League colleges bestowed upon students big cultural, economic and social status making them bag jobs without specializing in major subjects such as journalism. He cites an example of the news anchor Anderson Cooper of the news channel Cable News Network (CNN) who studied political sciences at Yale instead of journalism. He also states that the concept of journalism in the U.S. is driven by market-based logic fostering commodification in the higher education structure. |
