This chapter describes the saving of the American bison from endangerment and their future. As settlers moved west they killed many bison. In the 1900s Frederick Dupree and Charles B. Jones captured bison to sell to zoos, parks and ranchers who would breed them. They helped create The American Bison Society. President Theodore Roosevelt helped save the bison. Herds were sent to the National Zoo and Yellowstone Park. Today, bison live in wildlife refuges. They cannot be hunted. |
