Abstrakt: The article presents research which looks at the contribution of historical data, including maps, monographies from engineers and local scholars, and meteorological data, to the knowledge of floods with focus given to rivers in Southeastern France. The authors examine some of the difficulties encountered in using and interpreting such data and what can be learned from them. Topics include the description of floods dating back to the 14th century, the scientific knowledge of floods through the study of hydrometric surveys, and the variable geometry of river beds. Some of the rivers mentioned include the Garonne River, the Tarn River, and the Adour River.
