Abstrakt: This study examines the influence of appetitive activation on motivated cognitive processing of mediated messages. A within-subjects experiment was used to manipulate subjects' appetitive activation levels by varying the level of arousing content presented in 24 pleasant television messages. The Limited Capacity Model of Motivated Mediated Message Processing (LC4MP: A. Lang, 2006a; A. Lang, 2006b) was used to make predictions about the influence of appetitive activation on motivated cognitive processing of information within the messages. Audio recognition sensitivity, used to indicate thoroughness of encoding, was greater for moderately arousing positive messages than lower or higher arousing messages. Cued recall, used to indicate thoroughness of storage, was found to increase with arousal in pleasant television messages. The results support the LC4MP theoretical propositions that attention and memory are motivated phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
