Abstrakt: This paper presents an alternative conceptualization of neighborhoods, and a new method for drawing neighborhood boundaries. Using GIS software, geospatial analyses are applied to detail how alternative definitions of neighborhood boundaries can fundamentally alter research findings. Drawing from two school districts in a southwestern city with a population comprised mainly of Latinos, census data are used to provide better estimates of the multidimensional relationship between schools and neighborhoods. Regression analyses are employed to estimate the relationships between neighborhoods and school achievement. Findings support prior research which has found that neighborhoods matter only incrementally. Smaller effects for neighborhood influence were found with the newly proposed method. Findings challenge Wilson's theory of relative deprivation, yet they also open the door to the possibility that more refined measures of neighborhood disadvantage--extent and type of immigration--can better capture school-neighborhood dynamics. Findings also point to the value of taking a more nuanced look at the relationship between schools as institutions the neighborhoods from which their students are drawn as their local micro-environments.
