Abstrakt: The article reports on research which has investigated whether it is essential for adolescents who use drugs and alcohol and have chosen to stop to avoid peers who use drugs and alcohol and identify with a new group of non substance using peers to stay sober and avoid relapse. A discussion of the Alternative Peer Group model, which uses the peer group as a change mechanism by shaping positive peer influence in substance recovery, is presented. The mechanisms by which the model utilizes peer influence in adolescent recovery support are discussed.
