Abstrakt: A case study on New Mexico's mining industry between 1912 and 1940 is presented as means to explore the state's economic development and statehood. The author explains that statehood was largely impacted by increased U.S. federal government involvement in New Mexico's economic matters, as exemplified by the state's coal mining industry.
