The purpose of this session is to analyze the reactions of students to the Presidential Commission on Academic Renewal (PCAR) report by applying the Consciousness, Vision, and Strategy model (CVS), a theoretical model used to analyze social movements. (Project South: 2007) The objective of this session is to discuss the changing landscape of higher education in today's society. The location of this analysis is Howard University, a Historically Black University situated in an urban community in Washington, D.C. The CVS model addresses the consciousness, vision, and strategy critical to successfully initiating a social movement towards improving higher education. The goal of this study is to utilize ideological hegemony as a theoretical perspective and a practical framework for students to assess methods of gaining agency on college campuses. Using qualitative methodology (personal interviews, surveys, and content analysis) this study aims to apply the CVS criteria to address the ongoing challenges faced by the student body. This research has both theoretical and practical applications through the discussion of structures and agency in higher education spurred from this discussion. We hope that that the CVS model can facilitate social movement building, and introduce new ways of addressing similar issues on different campuses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
