In our society, decisions are increasingly motivated by fear. These motivations result in relying on short-term solutions, instead of addressing the real problem. This fact manifests itself in three different situations in modern society. Teen pregnancies are booming out of control, and the solution to the problem is more significant than lobbying for more harsh laws. Prisons are largely motivated by the media-hype of suburban mentality. The expansions of the prison system cannot go on, as it will potentially consume every dollar of each state budget in the union. If this billion dollar industry is to be our system of punishment, it is important to ask, are prisons the most beneficial thing to do for our society, just because people are afraid to deal with the problem? It is similar to the impact that gangs have had on urban culture. Gang culture is one of the biggest cultures motivated by fear, and thousands of minorities are dying because of it. Because people either want to run away from the problem, or consider it inevitable, current solutions to gangs are ineffective. This system of fear-motivated decision-making has perverted a whole culture into becoming instruments of their own destruction. If the people in our society continue to be motivated by fear, the results may be unpredictable and disastrous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
