About two hours in on his first day of filming the Downton Abbey Christmas Special, Peter Egan - who plays the Crawleys' even grander cousin Shrimpie, aka the Marquess of Flintshire - realised just how decidedly unglamorous the job of playing a TV aristocrat can be. The big scene on a day that had started at 5.30am required the veteran actor - who admits he 'begged' friends, including Dame Maggie Smith and his Ever Decreasing Circles co-star Penelope Wilton, to get him a role in the show - to be up in the Scottish mountains stalking a deer with Hugh Bonneville.
