Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal churches have experienced an expressive growth in the last thirty years in Brazil, the world's most catholic country. Recent data signalize they reached already a fifth of the whole population. In this article we try to show the historical backgrounds, the reasons for the fast expansion, the driving forces and institutions, the internal diversification and the conflicts within the Pentecostal religious field, the interests and the main characteristics of the churches involved in this process. At the end we point out the efforts of some Brazilian megachurches to expand internationally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
