The article examines the decision of John Emshoff not to attend the high school graduation of his daughter, after announcing his resignation as superintendent of the Boyd Independent School District in Texas. It discusses the challenge of Emshoff to avoid gossip and protect the privacy of his family. It relates the experiences of other school district superintendents Terre Davis, Janice Cooper and Michael Buoniconti when their decision making affected the lives of their children.
