Port Blakely, on the tip of Bainbridge Island across Puget Sound from Seattle, was the site of the largest sawmill in the world in the 1890's. Sailing vessels carried its wood to South America, Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and China. Nova Scotian William Renton (1818-91) had founded the mill in 1864 and rebuilt it when it burned in 1888. The company was sold in 1903 for about $3 million to John W. Eddy and David E. Skinner. Based on records of the PBM Company and on secondary sources; 11 illus., 52 notes. |
