The article discusses the demarcation of territories and states between the regions of Provence, France and Ligurie, Italy, with particular focus given to the vallée de la Nervia, between Vintimille and Sanremo, Italy, from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It considers the delimitation, through the use of boundary markers, of private and collective properties. The author examines the description of boundary markers and demarcation in archival sources related Nervia, Italy, and in toponymy. Topics of discussion include boundary markers along territories as noted in ancient texts from Apricale, Italy, boundary markers used by peasants in Nervia, and using demarcation as a remedy for litigations. |
