So far studies on three-way crosses have been made mainly for cross breeds using polyvoltines and bivoltine F1 hybrids. The information available on the performance of three-way crosses using exclusively bivoltines is scanty. The present study was undertaken in which three-way cross combinations were made by using the recently evolved promising bivoltine breeds of CSR series, to know the rearing performance and the extent of hybrid vigour in bivoltine three-way crosses as against the bivoltine single hybrids, so that promising hybrids can be identified for field testing. Using eight oval bivoltine productive breeds, 28 foundation crosses were raised, which were used as female parents and three dumb-bell bivoltines were utilized as male components. A total of 84 three-way cross hybrids were prepared and evaluated along with the control, CSR2 x CSR4 and the performance was assessed through multiple trait evaluation index which showed that 37 hybrids have mean index values >50. The highest E.I. Value of 62.33 was recorded in the three-way cross (CSR12 x CSR17) x CSR4, closely followed by 61.1 in case of (JPN7 x CSR3) x CSR4 and (JPN8 x S5) x CSR4, where the E.I. Value was found to be 59.02. The performance of these hybrids are significantly higher when compared to CSR2 x CSR4, where the mean E.I. Value was found to be only 47.08. Results of the present study has shown the prospects of identifying promising three-way cross hybrids for commercial exploitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
