This study tested Shrum's (2004) online cognitive process model of value cultivation with two distinct indices of value cultivation: consumer materialism and support for government services. It also argued that parasocial interaction is a form of impression formation and therefore, an online cognitive process that mediates the value cultivation effect. Controlling for gender, income, political ideology, need for cognition and television exposure, greater levels of television attention significantly predicted greater levels of consumer materialism and support for government services; furthermore, parasocial interaction with one's favorite television personality significantly mediated the relationship between television attention and value cultivation.
