Shadowing is becoming an increasingly popular method in management and organization studies. While several scholars have reflected on this technique, comparatively few scholars have discussed the specificities of shadowing and its implications for research on processes of organizing. To address this issue, we show in this paper how the activities that constitute shadowing as a method involve ongoing processes of framing, which not only guide methodological choices but also shape a given object of study. In particular, we define three kinds of framing activities that constitute organizational shadowing: (1) delineation of the unit of analysis; (2) punctuation of the flow of organizing; and (3) reflection on the relationship between the shadower and the shadowee. In turn, we demonstrate the implications of these activities for management and organization studies by analyzing a set of rich examples, taken from our own fieldwork experiences.
