The concept of the sign is revised so as to deal with the complexity of mapping meanings and forms in cultural expression. Signs cannot occur without an underlying system of meaning behind them. By revising the sign so that content belongs to epistemology and form is assigned to ontology, the problem of interconnectivity discussed in activity theory is accounted for in the form of reality-loops.
