Abstrakt: In this paper, I discuss the nature of adjectival modification in Javanese (Western Malayo-Polynesian, Austronesian). It is not clear on the outset whether adjectival modifiers in Javanese may be only indirect (i.e. relative clause-like) or both direct (i.e. true attributives) and indirect modifiers. Using comparative constructions, I show how the Degree Phrase can be used as a probe into the structure of adjective modifiers. Scope island effects in Javanese attributive comparatives strongly suggest that adjectives in Javanese are indirect modifiers, i.e. having a relative clause-like structure. In addition, the apparent lack of non-intersective modifiers as adjectives seems to be consistent with the hypothesis that Javanese only has indirect modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
