Abstrakt: The article offers information on coffee palaces in Australia and their association with the temperance movement. It informs that coffee palaces in Australia, usually multi-storied in capital cities, were used to describe temperance hotels of the late 19th century that aimed at discouraging alcoholism and upholding family values and states that the emergence of coffeehouses led the introduction of coffee as an antithesis of alcohol.
