Abstrakt: The article discusses the role of inference making in causing the information distortion that takes place in human communication. It examines the interaction of stories and schemata in an effort to determine if the interaction between the two may explain inferences as information distortion that occur in the recall of some messages. Literature on attempts to delineate where and when inferences occur in the memory process is mentioned. The idea of an interaction between schematic processing and story structure is explored. The need to develop less structured and more reliable methods of coping with free recall is also discussed.
