Abstrakt: The article presents information about East German academic debates on liberalism, occurring during the 1960s. Descriptions are given of the activities of a work group founded on March 9, 1962, which was dedicated to studying the history of civil parties. Key figures examined for their involvement in the discourse include academicians Alfred Schröter, Rolf Sonnemann, and Dieter Fricke. Further comments are made concerning the academicians' responses to theories of liberalism attributed to late 19th- and early 20th-century political theorists Ludwig Elm, Siegfried Schmidt, and Herbert Schwab.
