Abstrakt: The article discusses the depiction of Sufism and sexual-spiritual Sufi practices in 16th-18th-century Mughal paintings as well as in the memoirs of 17th-century Mughal princess and Sufi mystic Jahan Ara Begam. The author discusses paintings commissioned by Mughal emperors Jahangir and Dara Shikoh and suggests that they used Sufi elements to project a powerful image. Specific topics include the artist Govardhan, homoeroticism and pederasty in Sufi paintings, and terrace paintings.
