The article focuses on Matthew Arnold's elegies to his pets which, when viewed in the context of Jules Michelet's intellectual influence, acquires political and thematic depth. Arnold's pet elegies echo Michelet's parallel between the treatment of animals and the working class. Arnold's definition of poetry as a criticism of life also inheres in Michelet's commentary. |
