Abstrakt: The article presents a discussion of the state of patronage and its contribution to the furthering of female musicians' careers in Great Britain during the early 20th century. The author focuses on two specific music patrons, Marion Margaret Scott and Walter Wilson Cobbett, who promoted women's music through the Society of Women Musicians (SWM) in London, England, starting in 1911. The state of women's patronage is compared to that received by male musicians during that time, and specific attention is given to artists including Ethel Barns, Susan Spain-Dunk and Ethel Smyth. The impact of the SWM and music patrons of the 20th century on the availability of 20th century music created by women is discussed.
