Abstrakt: The article discusses the identity of Jews in the Austro-Hungarian empire between the year of the Compromise (1867) that established the dual monarchy, and the end of the First World War and the monarchy (1918). In 1867, the new Austrian constitution granted equal rights to Jews. Jewish immigration to the Habsburg monarchy and especially Vienna increased significantly. The author analyzes the ambivalence of belonging and alienation experienced by Jews in a multi-ethnic but anti-Semitic society.
