Abstract: Ionic liquids (ILs) are used as promising alternatives for the traditional volatile organic solvents employed in separation process, due to their unique properties and good solubility for many different materials. It has been used as extraction solvents for a wide range of environmental contaminates. In this paper, the main applications of ILs in separation of organic pollutants for sample preparation and pollution controlling are reviewed, and the problems and challenges in this area are also described.
