In this article the author offers observations on the life and work of the Czech designer Jiří Pelcl. Particular focus is given to how his designs of home products and furnishings have been influenced by socialism and an aversion to consumerism. His exhibition "The Incredible Lightness of Being: Jiří Pelcl - Czech Design" at the University of Brighton Gallery through February 20, 2012 is also discussed. |
