A report is presented on gender bias in the California court system as related to criminal and juvenile law. According to the authors, the lack of resources and services for families provided by the state's criminal and juvenile systems disproportionately affects women and children. Particular focus is given to to recommendations made by the state's Judicial Council Advisory Committee on Gender Bias regarding female offenders with young children, medical care for institutionalized females, juvenile dependency law, and attorney access to criminal and juvenile cases regardless of sex, race, or ethnicity. Other topics include appointed counsel, sentencing alternatives, and drug treatment programs. |
