Abstrakt: This article discusses the French understanding and response to the Cultural Revolution in China under Mao Zedong. Although the event sought to destroy the social order, it was viewed very favorably by the majority of French people. The reason for this can be found in the cultural tendency in France for social protest and a deep mistrust for governments and authority generally. It seeks to explain the viewpoints of French people who actually lived in China or traveled there while the event was taking place.
