Abstrakt: It is highly recommended that dentate patients wear a protective mouthguard when playing contact sports. However, there are few reports describing the need for mouthguards in edentulous patients and their fabrication procedure. A 61-year-old male patient with upper edentulous and lower partially edentulous jaws presented to our clinic requesting a mouthguard prosthesis. He had been participating in karate since 1993 and did not wear his dentures during activities. He complained that he felt weak without dentures and, most importantly, he wanted to prevent injuries that could fracture his jaws or lead to a concussion. The upper mouthguard fabricated first by the conventional method was ill-fitting and was not acceptable in terms of stability, retention, speech, and breathing. The patient also claimed he could not concentrate on sports. Subsequently, a newly designed mouthguard, named the "double-layered mouthguard", was fabricated. The patient was fully satisfied with the reconstructed mouthguard, and had no breathing difficulties or problems with speaking. This article describes the fabrication procedure of the double-layered mouthguard for edentulous patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
